6 tips for finding your passion

Your ‘passion’ is something that ‘lights you up’ & brings you joy. So why is it that when we talk about ‘finding our passion’, we’re usually met with feelings of pressure, stress, and worry?

The meaning of the word ‘passion’ has changed- from something we enjoy and thrive on, to being our purpose, our ‘why’. Perhaps it’s this that robs us of the joy, the freedom to let go and actually discovers our own passions.

We are a company born out of pursuit of passion- founder Karen Maxwell picked up candle-making as a hobby which grew from her passion to remove toxins from her life. This snowballed into orders from friends and family, and brought us to where we are today as a sustainable candle business in the UK, offering eco-friendly candles that are refillable & toxin free.

From this experience, we’ve learned so much about ‘following the joy’ in our lives, and the joy of this journey, so, we wanted to share 6 tips for helping you to find your passion.

    find what you don't like

Sometimes, the best place to start is to rule things out. By learning what we don’t want, we move closer to finding what we do enjoy. So listen to this and use it as a signpost for where ‘not to tread’, and try a different direction.

Keep ruling things out and exploring different directions until you find something you’re passionate about.

set aside time to mull things over

Actively slowing ourselves down can actually speed us up in the long run. Burnout doesn’t help us move towards a more fulfilled day to day experience, so we encourage you to slow down and actively block out time to just ‘be’.

Grab your favourite scented candle and light it at the beginning of your allocated ‘down time’. This helps make this time intentional, and the candle can become a great signifier for you to move into the right mindset to mull things over and slow down.

Our grounding essential oil candle is perfect for clearing our head and bringing a little clarity to our mind.

    notice what brings you joy

This can be found in the mundane- the seemingly ‘small moments’, and things that repeat in your day to day, from. An appreciation for your morning coffee smell could be a passion for coffee (whether that be growing, bean to cup, barista, providing these coffee moments for others in a cafe setting etc).

Note anything that makes you feel more content, whether this is a tidy house, cuddles with your furry friends or simply a good night’s sleep- this is a signpost that including more of these things in your life can contribute to an increase in your day to day happiness.

    Jealousy can actually help us

Our knee jerk reaction to jealousy is to push it down or to ignore it, but it can actually be a great indicator of what we want more of in our lives.

Say someone’s Instagram makes you feel a little jealous- what is it that you wish you had? Is it their travel lifestyle? Their career? Maybe that they have a new puppy in their life? Make note of this and work towards exploring it for yourself.

    try before you buy

You don’t have to jump ‘all in’. With our more ‘instant’ day to day lives with notifications demanding our attention left right and center, it only makes sense that we want everything to happen for us a lot quicker. However, give yourself permission to experiment and take time on this pursuit of passion. You don’t need the answers ‘now’, and in fact if you let go of this timeline, you can have a lot of fun along the way.

Want to try a pottery class? Great! Want to see if hiking is ‘your thing’? Book it in! ‘Try before you buy’ is a great mentality for window shopping these experiences and noting what you want more of.

    Take the pressure off

A passion doesn’t have to be a career choice. Some of the happiest people in this world have many passions for themselves outside of their job- they stack these into their evenings, weekends and time off.

Social media has made us feel that this isn’t the norm anymore, but remember that your life is yours- it’s as unique and individual as you are, so modeling it on a very small percentage of people’s highlight reels may not be the route that brings you the most joy.

Follow your joy, not someone else’s.

For our Founder, it’s her passion for interiors that she obsesses over during her down time, which inspires her design-led approach to our products.
